Does the thought of choppy seas, extreme heat and more than 6,500 competitors on your heels sound like a fun way to spend your weekend morning?
It did for the Melbourne O-I Corporate Triathlon team on Sunday, March 3.
Fifty-four employees braved 38 degree Celsius heat (that’s 100 degrees Fahrenheit for our international friends) and 20 knot winds to raise donations for the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne.
And what funds they raised – with AUD16,000 going directly to the hospital to help in the care of sick children!
One O-I employee especially touched by the amazing work the hospital does is ANZ controlling team member, James McLoughlin. James’ son, Callum, was diagnosed with spinal cord cancer at just 14 years of age and spent a great deal of time as the hospital. James says of hospital staff, “They literally moved heaven and earth to keep Callum alive. The staff were unbelievable, they just did so many things to make life bearable.”
It’s the fourth year in a row O-I has participated in the world’s largest triathlon. Each year, the team is coordinated and motivated by Rohan Sanderson, ANZ Category Director, Beer and Spirits.
“It was great to come together for this important cause,” Rohan said. “We really showed how – when working as a team – we can deliver amazing results. Thanks to the passion and commitment of the team, we’ve raised nearly AUD40,000 in just two years!”
